What Division is Coastal Carolina Volleyball?

Coastal Carolina University (CCU) volleyball team competes in NCAA Division I and is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, while their beach volleyball team competes in Conference USA. CCU’s athletes benefit from world-class training facilities and coaching personnel as a D1 school.

Volleyball scholarships are available at Coastal Carolina University.  NCAA DI, NCAA D2, NAIA, and NJCAA athletic scholarships are offered to student-athletes who can also apply for need-based and academic scholarships. The Sun Belt Conference is part of the NCAA Classification I-FBS division, and hosts many competitive schools.

Who is the Current Coach of Coastal Carolina Volleyball?

In January 2012, Jozsef Forman was hired as the head coach of Coastal Carolina’s women’s indoor volleyball team. In the fall 2022 season, he will begin his 11th season as head coach of the Chanticleer D1 volleyball team.

Forman led Coastal to its first-ever NCAA tournament match in 2016, and back-to-back Sun Belt Conference titles in 2017 and 2018. The Chanticleers won at least 20 games in each of those four seasons, compiling a 55-5 conference record in the process. 

After going 18-1 overall and 16-0 in conference play, Coastal Carolina finished the 2020 fall season ranked 14th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Fall Top 15 Coaches Poll, which includes NCAA DI, NCAA D2, NAIA, and NJCAA conferences. The Chanticleers set a new program record by starting the season with 18 straight wins, breaking the previous record-start of 9-0 before falling to Texas State in the final. 

Forman was named Coach of the Year for the third time in four years. Chad Sutton and Matthew Johann are the assistant coaches, and Valerie Nichol is the volunteer assistant coach. 

NCAA Tournament Appearances

Since 2014, the Chants have had four NCAA appearances, including the first round in 2014, 2015, and 2017, and second round in 2016. They have had four conference tournament titles and five regular-season conference titles. 

The volleyball Dukes program is one of the most successful in the country with four consecutive conference championships — Big South 2014, 2015 and Sun Belt 2016, 2017.
